I thought I would start on our perfume making series with a primer on essential oils. But with the holidays just around the corner, here is a simple perfume. Spicy and floral and will make a perfect home-made Christmas gift!
So I think it would good to start this section with a cost breakdown on a quality perfume compared to making your own cologne. It is actually a cologne
Perfume Making Need To Know
Basically the proportion is 55% base, 20% middle and 25% top. I would limit the number of essential oils to 3 oils, a maximum of 4 essential oils for the perfume.
Holiday Spicy Floral Perfume

Spicy floral perfume made with essential oils and perfect for the holidays!
- 10 Drops lavender essential oil
- 2 Drops ylang ylang essential oil
- 6 Drops cardamom essential oil
- 8 Drops vanilla essential oil
Rest: Once you’ve blended the essential oils, let the blend rest for at least 48 hours
Test smell: Open the bottle and place a drop of your blend on a testing strip. If you don't like the aroma, adjust as required.
Dilute Blend: Dilute the blend by adding 4 drops of carrier oil to get a 20% dilution. Do not add the blend straight (without carrier oil). Carrier oils can be jojoba, sweet almond, grapeseed or avocado.
Rest: Once you've diluted the blend, let it rest again. Repeat the aroma test again and adjust as required.
Application: Roll on arms, legs and behind the ears. Do not ingest!
Aromatherapeutic Properties Of Essential Oils
Pure essential oils have a complex composition. The chemical profile of a single oil may contain hundreds of individual constituents from a variety of chemical families. Essential oils are not only highly aromatic, but the natural chemical composition of many essential oils offers therapeutic benefits.
Citrus Floral Perfume

A citrus floral perfume blend with essential oils
- 12 Drops Bergamot essential oil
- 4 Drops Mandarin essential oil
- 10 Drops ylang ylang essential oil
- 8 Drops vanilla or frankincense essential oil
- Rest: Once you’ve blended the essential oils, let the blend rest for at least 48 hours
- Test smell: Open the bottle and place a drop of your blend on a testing strip. If you don’t like the aroma, adjust as required.
